After the first hard frost in fall, cut the main stems about 6 inches above ground level. Using a spading fork, gently loosen the soil about 1 foot away from the stem on all sides, then dig under the roots. Lift the clump carefully, drain moisture, and dry the clump in a cool, dry location. Clumps can be stored in a box in open air, vermiculite, or dry peat moss in a cool, dark area until spring.
