Buying Bargain Plants
Discount stores and supermarkets usually have plenty of bargain plants in late spring. Here's how to ensure that the bargain plants you're considering are truly good buys:
1. Avoid plants that are yellow or wilted.
2. Be sure plants are labeled.
3. Examine the plants closely for insects (especially beneath the leaves).
4. Sniff the soil. If it smells bad, the plant may be dying.
5. Never buy a sickly plant and expect to nurse it back to health.
6. Don't buy a healthy-looking plant that's surrounded by sick plants. It probably has the same problem but isn't showing it yet.
