5 Tips for Buying Quality Compost
Homemade compost is the best thing you can use to feed your plants and improve your soil. But even if you make your own, there may be times when you don't have enough of it to go around. That's when commercial compost comes in handy. Be forewarned, though: Not all commercial compost is created equal. Commercial composts are highly variable in organic matter and nutrient content. Some can even harm your soil and plants.
Fortunately, a simple look and smell are all you need to do to find a good-quality product. If possible, ask your garden center or supplier to let you take home a few samples before you buy. Put the samples through your own round of testing, using the following criteria:
1. The texture should be loose and granular.
2. The color should be dark brown.
3. The compost should be moist, not dry or soggy.
4. Mature compost has a pleasant, earthy aroma.
5. Mature compost contains 30 to 60 percent organic matter.
