Buy Bulbs Big

What makes a bounteous bulb? " 'Bigger is better' is the rule," says Sally Ferguson, the director of the Netherlands Flower Bulb Information Center in New York. "You get what you pay for." That means that the biggest bulbs will produce the biggest flowers, and they'll generally be priced accordingly. So if you want the best show possible, buy the biggest bulbs you can afford. Ferguson also notes that many people will mistakenly reject tulip bulbs with a torn tunic (the papery skin that covers them). "A healthy tulip without a tunic will grow as well as a healthy tulip with a tunic," she says. In fact, some research shows that removing the tunic may encourage rooting after the bulb is planted. You should avoid bulbs that are soft, mushy, or spotted with disease.
