An easy way to thin new seedlings in flats or in the garden is by cutting them off at ground level with a pair of nail scissors. "It's fast, and you avoid disturbing the roots of the seedlings you leave behind," says Nancy Bubel, the author of The New Seed-Starters Handbook, who starts nearly all of the seedlings for her garden and flower beds. Just be sure to sue a small pair of scissors with a sharp point so you can maneuver around the seedlings easily. A large pair would be too awkward.
