Fall is the best time to plant many trees, since they'll put out new roots until the ground freezes and get a jump-start in spring. But according to Bonnie Lee Appleton, Ph.D., an associate professor and extension horticulturist at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, research shows that the trees listed below don't generate many new roots in fall. These trees prefer spring planting:

'Bradford' Callery Pear
Cherry
Dogwood
Japanese Maple
Magnolia
Pin Oak
White Birch
Willow Oak
