A Whole New Walkway

Dress up a boring walkway that's still in good shape (and you don't want to remove) by installing precast concrete pavers on each side. It's easiest to install a double row of brick-shaped pavers. On each side of the existing walkway, dig a trench about 8 inches wide and 6 to 12 inches deep. The depth depends on how deep the ground freezes in your region- the colder it is, the deeper the trench should be. Fill the trench with 3/4 inch plant mix (a gravel with mixed sizes ranging from stone dust to 3/4 inch stone) to make a base for the pavers, leaving room for thickness of the pavers and 1 inch of coarse bedding sand. Compact the gravel, then top it with a 1-inch-deep layer of coarse sand. Bed the pavers in the sand and arrange them in a staggered pattern sot hat the joints don't overlap.
