Division Yields More Blooms
Are some of your perennials growing lushly but flowering poorly? To restore their flowering potential, dig and divide. Most perennials need dividing every 3 to 5 years, but a drop in flower production is the best indicator. Some popular perennials- hollyhocks, columbines, delphiniums, and lupines- are so short-lived that dividing won't help. Your best bet is to replace these perennials every few years with new plants grown from seed.
