Even Tomatoes Can Overheat
Although tomatoes, peppers, and eggplant are called "heat-loving" vegetables, they can still suffer heat stress in the ultrahigh heat of summer in places like the Southwest, where temperatures can top 110° F. To save plants from getting too much sun, keep shading materials on hand, such as sheets of corrugated aluminum, shingles, boards, house screens, old bed sheets or curtains, or pieces of cardboard. Let plants enjoy the morning sun, then set up the shading materials to shield the plants during the sizzling afternoons. (Be sure to collect all your shading materials early in the summer so you're not looking for things to use while your garden wilts on a blistering August afternoon.)
