To check the status of your compost pile, use a wooden stake as a "dipstick." Find a stake long enough to penetrate to the bottom of the pile and thrust it in. Wait a minute, and then pull out the stick. If it's hot and damp, your pile is still "working." When the pile is finished, the stick will be cool and wet. If the stick comes out dry, it means your compost isn't moist enough to stay active, so add water until the pile is consistently moist throughout-but not soggy.
