Potted Plant Care
Matching plants to the correct-size pot is a crucial part of success with container gardens. Small plants, like lettuce and chives, can get by in a 6-in-diameter (1 1/2-quart) pot, but they'll probably do much better in a container that's 8 inches across (3 quarts). They'll surely thrive in a 10-inch (6-quart) pot.

For large plants, like peppers and tomatoes, think big. Peppers require a pot that holds 2 to 3 gallons of soil (about 12 inches across). Most tomatoes need at least a 5-gallon pot; commercial ones this size usually run 15 inches in diameter.

You can create containers from recyclable items. Plastic 5-gallon food buckets often discarded by delis, supermarkets, and bakeries are great pots. Just be sure to punch drainage holes in the bottom. You can cut 55-gallon plastic barrels in half to make 25-gallon plant containers. You can also plant a whole garden in an inexpensive plastic wading pool or cement-mixing tray.
