Harness The Rain

Organic Gardening

Put that water cascading off your roof to good use. A small roof sheds 20,000 gallons a year, and in most cases, that water flows swiftly into the sewer system. But in cities such as Chicago and Portland, Oregon, rainstorms overtax the treatment facilities, allowing raw sewage to flow into local rivers and bays. How to help? Direct your downspouts onto mulched ground so the water soaks in; it will gradually recharge the aquifer and trickle out to nearby creeks. Be sure to put the end of the downspout far enough from the house so it doesn't create moisture problems—six feet if you have a basement; two feet if you don't. Want to go further? Store rainwater in screened barrels to reduce demand on the watershed that feeds your garden hose. For directions on how to redirect your downspout, visit www.cleanrivers-pdx.org, click on "Residential Services," then "Downspout Disconnection."
