Tough, adaptable daylilies are easy to grow. These popular perennials have colorful flowers that each last only a daybut a profusion of new buds keeps plants in bloom for 2 to 4 weeks.
Daylilies make great companion plants for spring bulbs, such as daffodils. The bulbs bloom as the daylily leaves emerge; then, the daylily foliage takes over as the bulb leaves turn yellow in summer. These versatile 1-day wonders are great for mass plantings, especially along walls or banks, or in combination with shrubs and trees. Use daylilies as accent plantings around foundations or with groundcovers.
Once established, daylilies spread quickly to form dense, broad clumps. Although you can leave the plants in place for years, some varieties produce so many stalks that the flowers get too crowded if the clumps aren't divided every 3 years or so. Lift the entire clump in late summer, pull or cut the thick tangled roots apart, and replant.
