The Right Tools

Organic Gardening

Use the best tool for each job and you make it easier and more rewarding to create a beautiful and productive garden. That doesn?t mean you need to spend a lot of money on a shed full of fancy gear.

We try out a wide range of gardening aids in the Organic Gardening test garden and we have no time to waste on tools that bend or break in tough soil, that work well a few times but don?t last, that are all hype and no substance. These tools are the ones we reach for often and would spend our own money on.

10 TOP TOOLS
OXO trowel: The modern version of the stick our ancestors used for cultivation has been given a comfortable ergonomic handle, serrated edges, and lines to help with bulb-planting depths oxo.com

Circle Hoe: Weeds and cultivates in even the hardest soil without strain on the garden or damage to nearby plants. circlehoe.com

Florian Ratchet Lopper: Cuts through thicker branches with minimum effort due to the ratchet design that moves steel blades forward with just a few pushes of the handles. floriantools.com

Ames True Temper wheelbarrow: Designed to never tip. It is easy to push up hills and in rocky areas. ames.com

Alsto's Backsaving Rake: Curved handle so the user's back never tires, and the head is expandable for raking lawns or getting at tight spots in the garden. alsto.com

OXO watering can: Perfectly balanced for low watering or watering that requires reaching, such as hanging baskets. Designed to store easily. oxo.com

Fiskars Transplanting Spade: The relatively narrow head makes a spade the ideal tool for digging in crowded beds when a shovel is too wide. fiskars.com

Vigoro Fork from Home Depot: A digging fork with four or five prongs breaks up dense dirt, loosens soil when adding compost, and is used for moving plants. vigoro.com

Hori Hori Knife from Hida Tool: One serrated edge and one smooth edge plus a slightly scooped blade makes this tool invaluable for close digging and cutting. hidatool.com

Felco Pruners: Specially angled blade cuts right through stems. Replacement parts means the tool last forever, if you don't misplace it in the garden. felcostore.com
