Over the Fence
You don't need to use smelly, toxic bug repellents to keep pesky insects such as mosquitoes and deerflies away. Certain essential oils can be blended to make a safe, effective, and homemade bug repellent. Arthur Tucker, Ph.D., research professor at Delaware State University, has developed his own recipe. He recommends using essential oils of basil, cedarwood, citronella, juniper berry, lemon, myrrh, palmarosa, pine, rose geranium, and/or rosemary. Combine very small amounts of any of these oils to make a total of 2 1/2 teaspoons. Pour 1 cup of 190-proof grain alcohol (available at liquor stores) into a jar with a tight-fitting lid. Add the prepared essential oils to the alcohol, screw on the lid, and shake vigorously. Transfer to small bottles for storage. To use, rub a small amount on any exposed skin (test on a small area first to be sure you're not allergic) or dab it on clothing. Be aware that some oils may stain fabric. Experiment to see which essential-oils combination works best with your body chemistry. Look for essential oils in natural-foods stores or from a mail-order source, such as
Aromaland (800-933-5267).
