1. Place 1/2 cup cumin seeds in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Shake the skillet occasionally until the cumin becomes a toasty brown color and starts to smoke (about 4 to 5 minutes).
2. Place the toasted cumin seeds to a bowl to cool. Once cooled, grind the seeds in a herb grinder or coffee mill until powder fine. Store in an airtight container for up to 4 months.
